TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR BOUND BROOK ATHLECTICS

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT

It is the intent of the Bound Brook Public Schools to provide the opportunity for students to participate in a challenging and meaningful athletic program.  Those students who desire to become a part of the program must accept the challenges, sacrifices, and responsibility of being a team member.  In an attempt to promote program unity and provide guidelines for team members the following training rules and regulations have been developed in conjunction with the athletic student/parent handbook.  We consider the participation on an athletic team to be a privilege; therefore students desiring to be part of the athletic program must agree to abide by these training rules and the athletic student/parent handbook.

1.        All regulations pertaining to student athletes will conform to the current N.J.S.I.A.A. guidelines and the rules and regulations of the Bound Brook Board of Education. This includes the academic eligibility policy, which states that a student must be passing a minimum of 27.5 credits for a full year and 13.75 credits per semester. They must also maintain a minimum of a  1.5 GPA.

2.        A parent or guardian and the student athlete prior to trying-out for a team must sign a permission slip for participation in athletics.

3.        Student athletes must pass a sports physical examination and have the examination form signed and approved by the school physician prior to participation.

4.        Beginning in the fall of 2006, the NJSIAA has mandated a steroid policy in which athletes could be randomly tested during the postseason. In order to participate, ALL athletes must sign the consent form and hand it in with their pre-season paperwork.

5.        Student athletes are expected to be in school at the regularly scheduled time.  Lateness to school will be subject to administrative action.  Athletes arriving at school after 10:20 A.M. must have prior administrative approval to be eligible to participate in an athletic contest that day.  In all cases, an athlete must be in school for a minimum of 5 class periods to participate that day.

6.        Student athletes are expected to attend all practice sessions and games but must attend practice the day before a game or contest, or they will not be permitted to participate in the next game.  Any exception must be approved by the coach and athletic director prior to the absence.  These exceptions must be limited to extremely unusual situations.

7.        All athletes must travel to and from all away games in school provided transportation.  Prior written permission to travel with parents must be approved by the coach and athletic director.  At no time are athletes to leave games or contests without parent/guardian permission and the coach/athletic director's approval.   (Travel forms are available in the Athletic Directors Office.)

8.        Student athletes are expected to participate in the regular physical education program.  Athletes not participating are to be reported to the proper coach by the physical education instructor.  Any ongoing problem should be referred to the Athletic Director.

9.        Individual coaches will have autonomy when selecting varsity teams, decisions to elevate or relegate student athletes is the sole discretion of the coach.

10.     Student athletes are also expected to communicate with their parent/guardian regarding and difficulties related to team matters.  Parent/guardian should contact the coach for clarification of concerns.

11.     Individual coaches may have additional rules and regulations pertaining to their particular sport.  These rules must not conflict with the ones included as part of these basic rules and regulations.

12.     Fighting or any form of disruptive behavior related to a game, whether before, during or after an athletic contest, on school property or not, is not acceptable.  In these cases the coach will take strong disciplinary action.  A period of suspension from all team activities, or removal from the team is possible.

13.     N.J.S.I.A.A. Ruling

1.         Any student-athlete or coach disqualified from an interscholastic event for flagrant or violent verbal or physical misconduct  (unsportsmanlike conduct)  will be disqualified from the next two  (2) regularly scheduled games/meets,  with the exception of football which will carry a one (1) game disqualification, at that level of competition and all other games(s)meets(s) in the interim at any level in addition to any other penalilties which the N.J.S.I.A.A. or league/conference may assess.

2.           Any player/coach disqualified a second time will have the penalty doubled (i.e., in football - disqualified for two (2) games; all other sports - four (4) games.

3.           A disqualified player or coach may not be physically present at any contest in that sport during the period of disqualification.

4.          Should a coach be disqualified from the final game/meet of the season, said disqualification will carry over to the next year in that sport.  In the case of the student-athlete, the same degree of penalty shall apply if the said athlete retains eligibility in that sport.

14.     If student athletes are guilty of stealing equipment or property, the athletes will be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season.

15.     The use of tobacco, in any form, is an unacceptable practice.  When it is determined that student-athletes have used a tobacco product during a sport season, they will be suspended from school for ten days as provided for in the Bound Brook Public School's Policy.  During the time of suspension from school, the student athlete is not eligible to participate in any athletic contest or sport.

16.     A student athlete must refrain from the use of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, and narcotics at all times.  In the event a student athlete violates this training rule, the following disciplinary action will be taken as outlined in the Bound Brook Public School's Policy.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    *In any case involving drugs or alcohol, the principal will notify the police, superintendent, and the parents of the student involved.  The first offense for possession or use in school will automatically result in ten days suspension and a parent conference before the student returns to school.                                                                                                                                                                   The second offense for possession or use, or any offense for distributing or selling, will result in indefinite suspension until a school board hearing takes place.

17.     Administrative suspension (in-school or out-of-school) of student athletes from their regular school program is totally unacceptable.  In the event that this action is taken by a school administrator, the student athlete forfeits their privilege to participate in team games and practices on days of suspension.  Upon return to their regular school program from suspension, the student athlete may return to team practice but will not be eligible to participate in games or contests played on the first day back.  Each individual coach has the right and responsibility to monitor the student athlete's attendance at practice and play athletes who attend regularly.  Repeated suspensions will result in dismissal from the team.

18.     It is assumed that student athletes will always conduct themselves in a way that exemplifies good school and community citizenship.  Behavior, including language, on or off the playing field, which is not of the highest quality, will place the athlete in a position of disciplinary action, including the possibility of dismissal from the team.

19.     STUDENT APPEAL PROCESS                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Students athletes may appeal any disciplinary action taken by a coach.  The first appeal should be made to the Athletic Director, who will render a decision as quickly as possible after gathering sufficient information.  At the request of the parent/guardian, the Athletic Director may convene a panel of coaches to review the case and make recommendations.

Additional appeals may be made to the school Principal.  Additional appeals should be directed to the Superintendent of Schools.

19.   MEDICAL COVERAGE - IMPORTANT                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Student athletes should have comprehensive medical coverage through a personal or family policy.  The Bound Brook Board of Education does provide a limited medical policy for excessive medical expense.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                This means that only that hospital, casting and surgery expenses which are not covered by your own personal or group insurance are eligible for coverage up to the limits of the policy.

20.     TRANSPORTATION

The Bound Brook Board of Education provides transportation for all athletes to and from games. It is mandatory that all athletes will travel on the team bus with the coaches and players. If for an extordinary reason an athlete can not return on the team bus, a parent may take their child home from an away contest as long as a note is given to the athletic director 24 hours in advance of the event. The excused note must be approved by both the athletic director and coach prior to the event.
